Red Hot is a new photographic exhibition by esteemed British photographer Thomas Knights, who first rose to public attention in 2014 with his book of the same name, intended to celebrate the uniqueness of the much-maligned ‘ginger’ as a subject of derision in popular culture who he therein re-presented as a subject of contemporary art and universal beauty. For the second exhibition of his work, Knights has collaborated with British Designer Elliott James Frieze to complete a new series of photographs that present the redheaded stylised as Greek sculpture or in the Baroque tradition, emulating the chiarosucro effect found prominently in Caravaggio paintings.
For the new exhibition, running 10-15 January 2017, the duo will present a selection of images from the new publication, Red Hot II*. Accompanying each of the photographs are quotes by the subjects themselves that provide insight into their experiences as redheads. The resulting exhibition is both a stark portrayal that challenges the so-called established ‘norms’ of beauty, but also champions the unique core message to ‘be comfortable in one’s own skin’ which is tantamount to the Red Hot legacy. Subjects in photographs for this exhibition come from Europe, the Americas, the Middle East, and Australasia: it is truly a testament to the ever-changing face of beauty, and acceptance, internationally.
Red Hot is a campaign renowned for pushing boundaries and creating dialogue in the ever- changing fashion industry, whilst raising funds for charitable causes. The Diana Award - who run the leading anti-bullying campaign in the UK - is the charity partner for the art book. Proceeds from the Red Hot project have raised over £45,000 for various charities and good causes.
